NAVY MODEL RCH RECEIVER
I thought, since quite a few OMs have asked about the E.H.Scott Navy Receiver Model RCH I'd do a page on it.
So here it is !!!!
,
The receiver is designated Type CZC-46209.It is an 11 tube superhet intended for shipboard and shore station use. The radio I have was assembled in 1943. The Navy accepted my unit (ser.# 1990) on 9May45.
It covers 80kcs to 24Mcs. in 5 bands minus the AM broadcash band. I have re-adjusted the local oscillator on band 3 down 100kcs to cover 160m.
According to the Navy manual it weighs 69 lbs. outside the shipboard shock mount cabinet. The audio fidelity of this receiver is superb. Although the I.F.(585kcs) is wide as a barn door (12+kcs) it makes an excellent 160 AM receiver.
Here's the reason for the 69 pounds and extensive shielding, right outta the navy manual.
The high frequency oscillator radiation, as measured at the antenna input terminals of the Type CZC-46209 Radio Receiver, is less than 400 micro-microwatts at any frequency covered by the Model RCH Radio Receiving Equipment. This characteristic will permit "safe" operation of the equipment on Naval vessels.
The receiver will copy code and slopbucket with the use of a very stable VFO. It really is nice to listen to the HiFi ssb guys on this radio.

Here it is paired with a Viking II.
There are 2 non-intrusive mods to this receiver.
1 - The audio output was 600 ohms. I picked up a 1k w/ct to 8 ohm transformer from Shadio Rack and mounted it next to the speaker terminals under the chassis. I actually used the ground lug to slobber mount the small transformer right at the terminal strip.
2 - No muting was provided. There was however an unused 2 pin beau plug mounted on the rear chassis of the receiver. I used it for muting by lifting the cathode wires of the r.f. and 1st i.f. amps from ground and bringing them to pin 1. Pin 2 is grounded. Between the pins is a 100k 1 watt resistor.
During receive the 100k is shorted by the mute relay on my dow key and the cathode lines are grounded turning the receiver on.
During transmit the 100k is in the cathode line effectively cutting off the tubes. There is a small "Eagle Ping" on key down but what the heck !!!

The top left switch allows you to use this receiver with another. The audio from either or both can be selected.
Oh.... by the way. I bought this receiver at a garage sale in Avon, Ohio along with the remains of a Globe King 500C. The Globe King was used as trade fodder with W8TOW.It awaits his able hands !!!!
